Event Only Positions

The following are designated as Event Only positions, and may only be staffed during a VATNZ event where approved, or if explicitly authorised by the Operations Director.

NZWD_APP coverage

NZIR_TWR is an event only aerodrome position.

NZWD_APP is not event only and provides the overlying approach service for the Williams Field terminal area, including traffic operating to and from Ice Runway.

Responsibilities

Ice Runway Tower is responsible for local aerodrome operations at NZIR when the position is staffed for an event. This includes runway operations, local traffic sequencing, and issuing takeoff and landing clearances.

NZWD_APP remains responsible for the surrounding terminal area, IFR sequencing, approach clearances, departure releases, and onward coordination with NZCM_FSS.

When NZIR_TWR is not online, NZWD_APP provides top-down service for NZIR.

Operations

Departures

Departing IFR aircraft require a release from NZWD_APP before takeoff unless otherwise coordinated. Once airborne and clear of immediate aerodrome traffic, transfer aircraft to NZWD_APP.

Arrivals

Arriving aircraft should be sequenced by NZWD_APP and transferred to Ice Runway Tower for landing clearance once established or when otherwise coordinated.

Visual approaches may be accepted when traffic and conditions permit.

Coordination

NZIR_TWR to NZWD_APP

Coordinate IFR departure releases, arrival sequencing, runway changes, missed approaches, and any non-standard operation with NZWD_APP.

No Overlying Controller

When NZWD_APP is not online, coordinate with NZCM_FSS if available. If no overlying controller is online, transfer aircraft to UNICOM on 122.800 once no further tower service is required.
